CHAP. 30.—An ACT to incorporate the Sons of Elijah in the city of
Richmond.
Approved March 31, 1879.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
Austin Burwell, W. LU. T. Jackson, William M. Campbell, John
Pryor, George Preston, and such other persons as are now or
may hereafter become members of said society, be and they
are hereby constituted a body politic and corporate, by the
name and style of The Sons of Elijah, of the city of Richmond,
and by this name shall have perpetual succession and a com-
mon seal, may sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded. They
may frame such constitution and by-laws and regulations for
the government of their society as they may deem proper, not
inconsistent with the laws of this state or of the United States :
provided that the treasurer of said society shall be compelled
to give bends in a sum not less than double the amount of
what funds may be entrusted to his keeping, as the majority of
the members, in open meeting, may determine.
2. The objects of said corporation are to promote temperance
and virtue, and a general prosperity among its members.
3. Said society may acquire and hold property, real and per-
sonal, to an amount not exceeding fifty thousand dollars.
4. The officers of ssid corporation shall consist of a presi-
dent, vice-president, treasurer and secretary, a business com-
mittee consisting of seven members, a banking committee of
three members, and such other officers as a majority of the
members may direct.
5. This act shall be in force from its passage, and be subject
to modification or repeal by the general assembly.
