Chap. 26.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 2 of chapter 236
of an act approved March 29, 1877, entitled an act iu relation to the
time for holding elections for town officers in the town of Smithfield,
in Isle of Wight county.
Approved March 28, 1879.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That section two
of an act approved March twenty-ninth, eighteen hundred and
seventy-seven, entitled an act to amend and re-enact section
two, chapter two hundred and forty-nine, Acts of Assembly,
eighteen hundred and fifty-six-seven, in relation to the time
of holding the elections for town officers in the town of Smith-
field. in Isle of Wight county, be amended and re-enacted so as
to read as follows :
2. At the next general election to be held on the fourth
Thursday in May, eighteen hundred and seventy-nine, and at
each goneral election for county and district officers thereafter,
there shall be elected by the qualified voters of the town of
Smithfield, in Isle of Wight county, a mayor and a board of
aldermen, consisting of four members, who shall serve as the
council of said town for two years, and until their successors
are clected and qualified. There shall also be elected, at said
election, a town sergeant and town constable, whose powers,
duties and fees shall remain as are now prescribed by law. The
said election shall be held at the same place at which other
elections are held, and shall be superintended, certified and as-
certained in the same manner as in the case of county and dis-
trict officers.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
