Chap. 129.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section one of an act to
amend and re-enact an act entitled an act to incorporate the town
of Newbern. and to repeal the act of 27th of May, 1852, entitled an
act to incorporate the town of Newbern, in the county of Pulaski,
in force March 4, 1872.

1, Be it enacted by the general assembly, That section one
of an act of the general assembly, in force March fourth, eigh-
teen hundred and seventy-two, as amended by an act approved
March sixth, eighteen hundred and seventy-four, be amended
and re-enacted so as fo read as follows:
§ 1. The village of Newbern. in the county of Pulaski, com-
prised in the following boundaries, to-wit: Beginning at the
McAdam road, at the southwestern corner of the lot on which
the Christian church stands; thence withthe line between said
lot and the Jands of J. A. Walker, to the northwestern § cor-
ner of said lot; thence northwest to a stake near J. B. Alex-
anders gate ; thence north seventy, east one hundred and
seven poles to a stake in said Alexander’s field; thence south
thirty-two and one-half, west forty-three and one-half poles to
a corner; thence south forty-eight, west one hundred and forty-
five poles, south fifty-four and one-fourth, west to a stake in the
line between the lands of John B. Baskerville and J. A. Walker ;
thence with the lines of J. A. Walker to the place of begin.
ning; shall be and is hereby made a town corporate, by the
name of the town of Newbern, and by that name shall have
and exercise all the powers conferred upon towns by the fifty-
fourth chapter of the Code of Virginia of eighteen hundred
and seventy-three, and all laws now in force, and which may
hereafter pass, for the government of towns containing less
than five thousand inhabitants, except as hereinafter pro-
vided; and Stephen II. Stone is hereby appointed mayor of
said town, and John B. Baskerville, William HEH. Bramblitt,
David 8. Pollok, William J. Jordan, C. 8S. Fitzhugh, and Thomas
S. Holland, are hereby appointed councilmen thereof; any three
of whom shall coustitute a board for the transaction of busi-
ness. ‘The said mayor and council shall have power to appoint
a sergeant and such other officers as may be necessary, together
with a police force, fur the preservation of order, who shall re-
main in office until their successors are apponted and qualified
according to law. The said mayor and councilmen, above
named and appointed in this aet, shall continue in office until
the fourth Thursday in May, eighteen hundred and seventy-
four, and thereafter until their successors shall be elected and
qualified.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
