CHAP. 69.—An ACT to incorporate the Grand Council of the Grand
Ancient Order of Sons and Daughters, Brothers and Sisters of Moses
in the state of Virginia.
Approved February 10, 1880.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
George L. Seaton, James I. Piper, Alfred Jones, Thomas
Allen, R. D. Ruffin, Frank Churchwell, John Chriesler, John
Holladay, Martha Parker, Mollie Ashby, Andrew Haskum,
Alfred Johnson, Nancy Shepherd, Thornton Shepherd, Baptist
Carpenter, W. H. Mathews, Thornton Helms, J. S. Shanklin,
Adam Moore and George Warner, and all others who are now
or may hereafter become associated with them, be and they are
hereby constituted a body politic and corporate by the name and
style of The Grand Council of the Grand Ancient Order of Sons
and Daughters, Brothers and Sisters of Moses in the State of
Virginia, and by that name may sue and be sued, plead and be
impleaded, have perpetual succession and a common seal, and
in all respects shall be invested with the rights and privileges
conferred and subject to the restrictions and regulations pre-
scribed for corporations by the general law so far as the same
are applicable to this corporation and not inconsistent with
this act.
2. The said corporation may take by purchase, gift, devise
or bequest, and hold real and personal estate, and lease, rent,
sell or otherwise dispose of the same in such manner as may
seem most advantageous: provided, it shall not hold real
estate exceeding one acre of land in any county or corporation
in this commonwealth.
ACTS OF ASSEMBLY.
3. The objects of the order shall be the maintenance and
education of the orphan children of deceased members, the
burial of its dead, and the care and oversight of its sick and
destitute.
4. The said corporation may institute subordinate lodges,
councils or temples in any county or corporation in this com-
monwealth, and shall have power to make and adopt a consti-
tution and by-laws, and rules and regulations for the admission
and expulsion of members and for their government, the elec-
tion of officers and to define their duties, and for the safe-
keeping and protection of its property and funds: provided,
the same be not inconsistent with the laws of the United States
or of this state.
5. This act shall be in force from its passage.
