CHAP. 62.—An ACT to incorporate Burwell Lodge, No. 18, of the
Independent Order of Good Samaritans, of the city of Manchester.
Approved February 10, 1880.
Whereas there has existed for some time past in the city of
Manchester an association of colored persons known as Bur-
well Lodge, Number Eighteen, of Independent Order of Good
Samaritans, the purposes and objects of which are solely be-
nevolent and charitable, which by the contributions of its
members has accumulated funds which if properly invested
in the purchase of real estate will more effectually enable said
association to carry out the purposes of their organization, and
to that end desire an act of incorporation ; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
James R. Hobson, Richard T. Coghill, Bartlett Davis, Hilliard
Armstead and Anderson Simmons and such other persons as
are now or may hereafter become members of the association,
be and they are hereby made a body politic and corporate by
the name and style of Burwell Lodge, Number Eighteen, of
the Independent Order of Good Samaritans; and by that
name may sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, in all the
courts of this commonwealth.
2. The objects of this corporation shall be to take care of
its sick and destitute members, to bury its dead, to support
the widows and orphan children of its members and encourage
and promote good morals and knowledge among its members
and their families.
3. The said corporation may take and hold so much real and
personal estate as may be suitable for its objects, either within
or in the immediate vicinity of the city of Manchester, not to
exceed in value five thousand dollars.
4. The place of business of said corporation shall be in the
city of Manchester, and it may make such by-laws, rules and
regulations consistent with the laws of this state and the
United States as it may deem proper for the government of its
members, the management of its affairs, and for the use, enjoy-
ment and control of its property.

5. The legislature reserves to itself the right to modify or
repeal this act at pleasure.
6. ‘This act shall be in force from its passage.
