CHAP. 232.—An ACT instructing the Governor to hire out the con-
victs at the Granite Company’s works to Messrs. Mason, Shannahan
and Hoge, for the sum of thirty-five cents per day in addition to
their maintenance.
Approved March 8, 1880.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the governor is hereby empowered and instructed to contract
with Messrs. Mason, Shannahan and Hoge for the hire of the
convicts now in the employ of the Granite company, near Rich-
mond, to work them on the Clifton Forge railroad and other
railroads in the state, upon the following terms, to-wit: The
said Mason, Shannahan and Hoge to feed, clothe, guard and
house the convicts, and pay the state the sum of thirty-five cents
per day for each convict for every day actually employed; the
labor performed by said convicts to be certified under oath by
said Mason, Shannahan and Hoge, or their authorized agents,
and to be approved by the state physician in charge of said
convicts at the end of each month.
2. Be it further enacted, That the governor is hereby in-
structed to take from the said Mason, Shannahan and Hoge
their bond with ample security for their faithful performance
of said contract.
3. Be it further enacted, That the aforesaid convicts, whilst
in the employ of said Mason, Shannahan and Hoge, shall at
all times be under the direct supervision of the superintendent
of the penitentiary as to the manner of the treatment of said
convicts, including their diet, clothing, housing, and so forth.
4. This act shall not interfere with contracts with any inter-
nal improvement company heretofore made.
5. All acts and parts of acts in conflict with this act are
hereby repealed.
6. This act shall be in force from its passage.
