CHAP. 55.—JOINT RESOLUTION declaring the whole system of
tobacco taxation unjust and oppressive, and endorsing the efforts of
our senators and representatives in congress to procure the reduc-
tion of the tax thereon, and invoking them to insist on a speedy
disposition of the question.
Approved February 1, 1879.
1. Resolved by the general assembly of Virginia, That while
we deem the whole system of tobacco taxation unjust and op-
pressive upon the producer of the great staple of one section
of the country, we heartily endorse the efforts of our senatars
and representatives in congress to procure the reduction of the
tax on tobacco to sixteen cents per pound.
2. And that, in view of the fact that business has been sorely
depressed by the long delay of congress to reach final action om
the question, we invoke them to insist on a speedy disposition
of it, and to employ every legitimate means to,consummate the
partial relief desired.
3. That a copy of these resolutions be sent to each of the
senators and representatives of Virginia.
