CHAP. 218.—An ACT to amend sections 7 and 9 of an act approved
December 29, 1877, entitled an act to amend the act entitled an act
0 incorporate the Lee Monument Association, approved Jauuary
meee Approved March 2, 1879.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the seventh and ninth sections of an act approved December
twenty-ninth, elghteen hundred and seventy-seven, entitled an
act to amend the act entitled an act to incorporate the Lee
monument association, approved January twenty-fifth, eighteen
hundred and seventy-one, be amended so as to read as follows:
§ 7. Before the board.of managers shall contract for the exe-
cution of an equestrian, or such other statue or monument to
General Robert E. Lee, as may hereafter be adopted, they shall
notify the governors of the southern states, including Virginia,
contributing thereto, and it shall be lawful for the several gov-
ernors of such states to appoint commissioners on the part of
such state, nol exceeding three in number, citizens of and resi-
dents in their respective states, who, with the board of mana-
gers, Shall constitute a board of commissioners, whose duty it
shall be to select the artist who shall execute the work. upon
competition or otherwise, aud such city or town and location
therein, as to the said board of commissioners shall scem best,
and no award shall be made, except upon the vote of the states
so contributing to the execution of the said statue or monu-
ment, cach state casting one vote.
69. The object of this act being simply to secure to the
states contributing to the said statue cr monument of General
Lee apn cqual voice, one with the other, in the selection of the
artist for its erection, and of the place ss aforesaid, itis liereby
“xpressly proyided that when such sclection shall have been
made, then the said board of commissioners shall be functus
officio.
