Chap. 216.—An ACT to ineorporate the Chesapeake Lodge, No. 1596,
Grand United Order of Odd-Fellows, of the village of Hampton.
Approved March 8, 1879.
Whereas there is established in the village of Hampton, in
the state of Virginia, a benevolent institution known as the
Chesapeake Lodge, number fifteen hundred and ninety-six of
the Grand United Order of Odd-Fellows, which has for its ob-
jects mutual aid and assistance of its members in time of sick-
ness, and burial of deceased members, the support of their
widows and the education of their orphans; and whereas it
is believed that the facilities of the said institution for the
accomplishment of its benevolent purposes would be greatly
promoted by obtaining an act of incorporation of the trustees
of the said Chesapeake lodge; therefore,
1. Be if enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
Andrew Bassett, John Mason, Frank Lans, Lewis W. Walker,
William Kirby, James H. Diggs, Cary Washington, James
Clark, Christopher Chamblaing, and their successors, be and
they are hereby appointed a body politic and corporate, by the
name and style of The Chesapeake Lodge, Number Fifteen
Hundred and Ninety-six of the village of Ilampton; and by
that name shall have a perpetual succession and a common
seal; may contract and be contracted witli, sue and be sued;
may acquire and receive, hold, possess and enjoy, and may rent,
sell, convey, invest, and otherwise manage or dispose of, as to
them may seem most conducive of the interest and promotion
of the benevolent purposes of the said Chesapeake Lodge.
number fifteen hundred and ninety-six of the order of Odd-
Fellows of the village of Hampton, all lands, money, or other
property, real or personal, which may have been, or may be
given, or otherwise acquired for the use of the said Chesapeake
lodge, number fifteen hundred and ninety-six of the Grand
United Order of Odd-Fellows of the village of Hampton; and
the said trustees and their successors shall hold office as trus-
tees no longer than they remain members of the said Chesapeake
lodge, or until their successors enter upon the discharge of their
duties as trustees: provided that the sum of money so acquired
shall not exceed the sum of twenty thousand dollars: and pro-
vided that the amount of land held by them shall not exceed
one-half of an acre in the village of Hampton.
2. The trustees herein named shall continue to act as such
until their successors are duly elected and enter upon the dis-
charge of their duties as trustees.
3. The trustees, nine in number, shall be elected according
to the rules and laws of the aforesaid Chesapeake lodge, num-
ber one thousand five hundred and ninety-six of the Grand
United Order of Odd-Fellows of the village of Hampton, and
shall have power to appoint such officers as may be requisite ;
and shall exact from any of them such bonds or other security,
in such penalty as the trustees shall direct, conditioned for the
faithful performance of their duties; and the bonds of the sec-
retary and treasurer of said lodge, and other officers of whom
bonds may he required, may be made payable to said trustees:
provided that nothing herein contained shall be construed as
authorizing said company to establish any lottery or gift enter-
prise, or to dispose of any property by lot or chance.
4. Three trustees shall constitute a quorum for the transac-
tion of business, but it shall require a majority of all the trus-
tees to constitute a quorum for the sale of real estate.
>. This act shali take effect from its passage, and shall be
subject to amendment, modification, or repeal, at the pleasnre
of the general assembly.
