Chap. 85.—An ACT to incorporate the corporation of St. George’s
Hospital for the United States and Canada.
Approved February 20, 1878.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
George Roach, of Hamilton, Canada; Samuel Lees, of Phila-
delpbia; Daniel Batchelor, of Utica, New York state; Wil-
liam Tomlin, of Bridgeport, Connecticut; C. HE. Pierce, of
Hamilton, Canada; J. E. Pell, of Toronto, Canada’ G. Chase,
of Guelph, Canada; and the Reverend W. D’Orville Doty, of
Watertown, New York state, who are, respectively, the presi-
dent, vice president, treasurer, corresponding secretary, gen-
eral secretary, chaplain, and executive committee of the
North America Saint George's union; Lewis Thompson,
president, and William Underdown, secretary of the society
of the Sons of Saint George, Philadelphia; David B. Ten-
nant, presidents J. M. Quicke, chairman, and Charles Leon-
ard, treasurer of the British association of Virginia; Henry
Jacob, president, and Alfred) Moth, secretary of the Farm-
Ville British society; Charles Bags, president of the English
and American bank, Farmville; JOA UL St. Andrew, Edgar
Allan, Thomas Homer, R. Randolph Stephenson, M. D., and
J. W. Webdetch, of Virginia, be and they are hereby created
a corporate body, under the name of The Corporation of
Saint George’s Hospital for the United States and Canada.
2. The said corporation shall be subject to the general laws
of the state, have power to make and adopt a constitution
and by-laws, to use a common seal, and may sue and be sued
as a corporate body.
3. The said corporation shall have power to acquire, by
purchase or otherwise, at Clarendon, in) Prince Edward
county, or elsewhere in the state of Virginia, real or per-
sonal property, not to exceed in value ten thousand dollars,
for the purpose of establishing and maintaining homes for
such members of the Saint George’s and other British soci-
eties of the United States and Canada as the corporation
may admit to its beneficiary advantages.
4. The names of the officers who, for the first, are to
manage the affairs of the corporation, are as follows: presi-
dent, George Roach; vice president, Samuel Lees; treasurer,
Daniel Batchelor; corresponding secretary, William Tomlin;
general secretary, C. K. Pierce; chaplain, the Reverend W.
D’Orville Doty; honorary counsel, Edgar Allan; honorary
architect, Henry Jacob; honorary physician, R. Randolph
Stevenson, medical director; warden, William Tomlin; vice-
warden, Thomas tomer; board of governors, the foregoing
officers and David B. Tenant, Charles Buys, Charles Leonard,
J. M. Quick, Alfred Moth, J. W. Hebditch, J. A. H. St. An-
drew, Lewis Thompson, William Underdown, J. E. Pell, and
G. Chase.
9. On application of the said corporation, this charter may
be amended at any time by any circuit court in this state,
when the general assembly is not in session.
6. This act shall be in force from its passage.
