Chap. 302.—An ACT to authorize the construction of a turnpike road
in Princess Anne and Norfolk counties.
Approved March 14, 1878.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That William
H. Burroughs, Charles Sharp, F. M. Halstead, Aurelius
Wrenn, Matthew Hare, Francis Richardson, and such other
persons as may hereafter be associated with them, be and are
hereby made a body corporate and politic, under the name,
style, and title of The Indian River Turnpike and Toll.
Bridge company, with full and adequate powers to construct
a turnpike road from a point in Princess Anne county, near
the intersection of the Gum swamp road, with the main road
leading from Kempsville to Great Bridge to a point in Nor.
folk county on the lands called Campostella, formerly
owned by Frederick Wilson, said point being near, the fair-
ground on said property known as Campostella; with power
also to construct a toll-bridge over the stream sometimes
called Indian creek, but which may hereafter be called
Indian river, at a point between the lands of W. Selden and
lands formerly owned by Amos Ives; and also, with full
power and authority to acquire, by gift or purchase, or by
condemnation according to law, of as much land as may be
needed to construct and operate said road: provided that
the bridge hereby authorized to be built, shall be constructed
with a suitable draw, not less than cighteen feet in the clear
in width: and provided further, that said turnpike road shall
not be Jexs than thirty feet, nor more than sixty feet in
width.
2. Books of subscription to the capital stock of said com-
pany may be opened in the city of Norfolk, under the super-
vision of any three of the above named corporators, who are
hereby authorized to act as commissioners. The capital stock
shall not be less than five thousand dollars, nor more than
twelve thousand dollars.
- 3. The said company may collect tolls tor passing over
said road or bridge, or both of them. The rates of toll may
be regulated by the company, but shall not exceed the rates
now char ged by the Cottage toll-bridge company.
4. Said ¢ company shall have the right to cross the beds of
such public roadsas may be necessary: provided that no tolls
be eharged for passing over such portions of the public roads
as may ‘be occupied or improved by said company.
_5. This act.shall be in force from its passage.
