Chap. 176.—An ACT to incorporate the Norfolk and Berkeley railroad
company.
Approved March 7, 1878.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That William
W. Jones, William S. Butt, George McIntosh, F. 8. Taylor,
William F. Allen, and W. C. Hardy, and such others as may
be associated with them, be and they are hereby constituted
a body politic and corporate, by the name and style of The
Norfolk and Berkeley railroad company; and shall have
authority to construct and equip a railway, and to run cars
thereon by steam, horse, or mule power, for the conveyance
of passengers and property from the intersection of Church
street with Main street, in the city of Norfolk, to a point in
Berkeley, near the wharf of the Berkeley ferry: provided
that the consent of the council of the city of Norfolk be first
obtained to the use of Main street in said city: and provided
that the consent of the county court of Norfolk county be
first obtained to the use of such part of the county road as
may be required.
2. The maximum capital stock of said company shall not
exceed twenty thousand dollars, and the minimum shall be
eight thousand dollars.
3. W. F. Allen, F. S. Taylor, and W. C. Hardy are hereby
appointed commissioners to receive subscriptions to the capi-
tal stock, and to call a meeting of subscribers for organiza-
tion, in accordance with the provisions of the Code of Vir-
ginia of eighteen hundred and seventy-three, in regard to
chartered companies. Said company may acquire land in
ayment of subscriptions, or by donations, and may sell,
ease, or otherwise dispose of the same. The fare on said
road shall not exceed ten cents for each person each way.
4, This act shall be in force from its passage.
