Chap. 145.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 19 of an act
approved March 20, 1875, entitled an act to provide for working and
kecping in order the reads of the commonwealth.
Approved March 4, 1878,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the nineteenth section of an act, approved March twentieth,
eighteen hundred and seventy-five, entitled an act to provide
for working and keeping in order the roads of the common-
wealth, be umended and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
~~ §§.19. Every such surveyor shall superintend the roads in
his precinct; he shall cause the same to be kept cleared,
smcothed of rocks and obstructions, of necessary width, well
drained, and otherwise in good order, and secure from the
falling of dead timber therein; he shall cause to be placed
and kept, at the forks or crossing of every road, a sign-
board, on which shall be stated, in plain letters, the most
noted place to which each road leads; and across every
Stream where it is necessary und practicable, a sufficient
bridge, bench, or log, for the accommodation of foot passen-
gers. When any more important bridge, or causeway, is
necessary, and it is practicable for bim to have it made, be
shall cuuse it to be made, twelve feet broad at the least, and
sufe and convenient. Every bridge, or causeway, in his pre-
cinct shall be kept by him in as good order as tbe means in
his power will permit; and for all these purposes, he shall
have power, and he is hereby authorized and required, to
enroll all persons liable to road service, who are not legally
excmpt by law, who shall have resided in said precinct ten
days.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
