Chap. 123.—An ACT to amend the charter of the Straight-shoot rail-
rond company, to change its name to the Richmond and Alleghany
railroad company, and to extend its limits.

1, Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
sections cight and four of an act, entitled an act to amend
the charter of the Richmond and Lynchburg railroad com-
pany, approved July cleventh, cightcen hundred and seventy,
and amended and re-enacted by an act approved March
twenty-seventh, eighteey hundred and seventy-three, be
further amended and re-enaéted so as to read as follows:
§8. The title of the Richmond and Lynchburg railroad
company is hereby changed tothe Richmond and Alleghany
railroad company, and the construction of that part of the
road that lies between Richmond and Lynchburg shall be
commenced within two years and completed within four
years of the passage of this act; and of that part between
Lynchburg and Buchanan and the branch to Lexington,
shall be commenced within ninety days and completed with-
in twelve months of the date of any contract that may be
made with the James River and Kanawha company for the
use of the intermediate works.
§4. It shall be lawful for the said company to borrow
money, at a rate of interest not exceeding cight per centum,
and to secure the payment of the same by a first mortgage
not exceeding fifteen thousand dollars per mile, and a second
mortgage not exceeding ten thousand dollars per mile of its
main and branch lines.
2. All the rights, privileges, and franchises heretofore con-
ferred upon the Richmond and Lynchburg railroad company,
and upon the Straight-shoot railroad company, are conferred
upon and vested in the Richmond and Alleghany railroad
company; and the Richmond and Alleghany railroad com-
pany may lease or purchase any connecting railroad, or any
of the franchises, privileges, and property of any other work
of internal improvement within the limits of this charter:
provided the rights of creditors shall not be impaired
thereby.
3. The main line of the said railroad company shall be
from Richmond, via Lynchburg, to any point on the Chesa-
peake and Ohio railroad west of Staunton, and it may extend
its main or branch lines to any point or points cn the West
Virginia state line, via Craig’s creek or Jackson’s river, or
any other tributary of James river, and the most practicable
routes; and it’ may connect with the Buchanan and Clifton
Forge railroad, at or near Buchanan; an it may build a
branch to Lexington, and one to Fincastle; but this act shall
not be construed as interfering with any of the franchises or
privileges of the James river and Kanawha company, or of
tbe Buchanan and Clifton Forge railway company.
4, This act shall be in force from its passage.
