Chap. 110.—An ACT to purchase a burial place for convicts in the
penitentiary, outside of the corporate limits of Richmond.
Approved February 22, 1878.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the board of directors of the penitentiary are hereby autbor-
ized and directed to procure, in conjunction with the authori-
ties of the Richmond city almshouse, and the superintendent
ot the penitentiary, or otherwise, as may be in their judg-
ment most advantageous to the state, a lot of ground as a
place of burial for convicts, suitably located outside of the
corporate limits of the city ef Richmond: provided, however,
that the lot used for the burial of convicts shall be separate
and distinct from the lot used as a burial place in connection
with the city almsbouse; and the lot used as a burial place
tor convicts, shall be divided into two sections, one for the
burial of the white and the otber for the burial of the colored
convicts. Until such purcbase be made, the board of direc-
tors and superintendent of the penitentiary are authorized
to bury convicts within the grounds attached to the peniten-
tiary.
2 The sum of four hundred dollars is hereby appropriated
from the treasury, out of any money not otherwise appro-
priated, for carrying out the provisions of this act.
3. This act shall be in force from its passage.
