Chap. 11.—An ACT to amend and re-enact the 20th section of an act
entitled an act to provide a new charter for the city of Portsmouth,
approved March 11th, 1878.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That the twen-
tieth section of an act to provide a new charter for the city
of Portsmouth, approved March eleventh, eighteen hundred
and seventy-three, be amended and re-enacted so as to read
as follows:
§ 20. Where, by the provisions of this act, the city council
has authority to pass ordinances on any subject, they may
prescribe any penalty not exceeding five hundred dollars,
(except where a penalty is herein otherwise provided for),
for a violation thereof, and may provide that the offender, on
failing to pay tbe penalty recovered, shall be imprisoned in
the jail of said city for any term not exceeding three calen-
dar months; which penalties may be prosecuted and recov-
ered, with costs, in the name of the city of Portsmouth.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
