Chap. 55.—An ACT to authorize and direct his excellency the governor
to convert the medal fund, donated through Honorable A. J. B. Beres-
ford Hope, by the admirers of General Thomas J. Jackson in Great
Britain, into outstanding state bonds.

Whereas it is represented by his excellency the governor
of Virginia, in his annual megsage, that a sum of money has
been donated through Honorable A. J. B. Beresford Hope,
by the admirers of Thomas J. Jackson in Great Britain,
as the foundation of two gold medals, to be conferred an-
nually upon the two most distinguished graduates of each
class of the Virginia Military Institute, and suggesting that
authority be given to convert the medal fund into outstand-
ing state bonds, and that the annual payment of a sum equal
to the interest thereof be guaranteed, so that the principal
may be forever preserved and the income regularly applied
according to the generous designs of the donors:
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That the gov-
ernor be and be is hereby authorized and directed to convert
the medal fund, aforesaid, into outstanding state funded bonds.
2. That the same rate of interest shall be paid on the bonds
purchased under the provisions of this act, as is provided shall
e paid on bonds held by the incorporated colleges of Vir-
ginia, under the provisions of section twenty-two, chapter
eighty, of the Code of eighteen hundred and seventy-three.
3. This act shall be in force from ita passage.
