Chap. 221.—An ACT to amend and re-enact sections first and sixth of
chapter forty-five of Acts of Assembly approved February seventh,
eighteen hundred and seventy-six, to authorize the qualified voters of
Halifax county to vote on the question of the purchase or construc-
tion of a bridge at South Bostun, in that county.
Approved March 29, 1877.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
sections one and six of chapter forty-five of an act to autho-
rize the qualified voters of Halifax county to vote on the
question of the purchase or construction of a bridge at South
Boston, in that county, be amended and re-enacted so as to
read as follows:
§ 1. That whenever the sum of two thousand dollars shall
have been subscribed forthe purpose of buying or construct-
ing a bridge at South Boston, in Halifax county, it shall be
the duty of the county court of said county, upon the peti-
tion of fifty or more of the qualified voters of said county
who are frecholders, to issue an order to the several officers
onducting elections in said county to take the sense of the
ualified voters, who sball desire to vote upon the question,
at the time and places for holding the first general election
athe year eighteen hundred and seventy-seven,) of the pur-
hase omconstruction of said bridge; and at said election each
aalified voter who shall approve the purchase or construc-
ion of said bridge, shall deposit a ballot, on which shall be
rritten or printed the words: “For the purchase or construc-
ion of bridge;” and each voter who shall oppose said pur-
‘hase or construction, shall deposit a ballot, whereon shall be
written or printed the words: “Against the purchase or con-
truction of bridge.”
§ 6. In the event that the county court of Halifax county
shall, for any cause, fail to submit the question of the pur-
thase or construction of the said bridge to the qualified voters
of said county, at the first general election in the year eigh-
teen hundred and seventy-seven, then it shall be lawful, on
the petition of one hundred or more of the qualified voters
of said county, being freeholders, for the county court of said
county to submit the question of the purchase or construc-
tion of the said bridge to the vote of the legally qualified
voters of said county, at any regular election to be held at
any time subsequent to the fourth Thursday in May, eighteen
hundred and seventy-seven, in the manner and torm pre-
scribed in thisact; and in case three-fifths of the voters voting
in such election shall vote in favor of tbe purchase or con-
struction of the raid bridge, and a majority of the legally
qualified voters of the county vote in said election, the county
court of said county and the board of supervisors of said
county, shall proceed to carry out the will of the people as
herein prescribed.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
