Chap. 201.—An ACT to provide for the taking of the census of the
school population of Lee county.
Approved March 21, 1877,
1. Beit enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
immediately after the passage of this act, or as soon as may
be practicable thereafter, the county superintendent of schools
of Lee county, shall summon the county school board to
mect at the courthouse of said county, in order to consider
whether or not it be advisable that a special school census
shall be taken. for the county previous to the regular census
of eighteen hundred and seventy-eight; and in case a ma-
jority of the trustees of the county vote in favor of the taking
of such special census, it shall be the duty of the president of
the board, with the aid of its clerk, immediately to give offi-
cial notice to each of the district boards, in respect to the ac-
tion of the county board; whereupon, it will be the duty of
cach district board to order a census to be taken by the clerk
thereof, in conformity (so far as not inconsistent with this
present act) with the act approved January nineteen, eighteen
hundred and seventy-five: provided, that each clerk shall be
required to rule his own blanks according to the form pre-
scribed by the superintendent of public instruction: and pro-
vided further, that the work shall be completed before the
first day of August, eighteen hundred and seventy-seven.
2. The census returns in cach district, when the same are
made up, shall be submitted to the district school board for
:t8 examination and revision, and when approved by it as cor-
rect, shall be forwarded by the district school board to the
county superintendent of schools for his examination; and
after such examination by the county superintendent, and
his approval of the same, the said officer shall immediately
forward to the superintendent of public instruction a state-
ment of the results of said census; and any apportionment
of state school funds made by the said superintendent of pub-
lic instruction after the receipt of such statement, and before
the taking of another census, shall be made in conformity
with the census taken under this act, and based on the same:
provided, that the taking of this special census sball not
supersede the regular census of eighteen hundred and seven-
ty-eight.
