Chap. 113.—An ACT to incorporate the Portan wharf company, in
the county of Gloucester.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That James R.
Clayton, William L. Enos, R. J. Young, Robert C. Jones,
Walter N. Jones, and S. A. Snyder, and such other persons
as may hereafter be associated with them, shall be, and they
are hereby, incorporated and made a body politic and corpo-
rate, for the objects herein expressed, under the name and
strle of The Portan Wharf Company, and by that name and
style shall be vested with all the rights and privileges con-
ferred, and made subject to all the rules, regulations, and re-
atrictions imposed by the laws of Virginia applicable to cor-
porations and not inconsistent with this act.
2. The capital stock of the said company shall not exceed
the sum of five thousand dollars, divided into shares of twenty-
five dollars eAch; and subscriptions may be received in money,
land, lumber, labor, or ether property, and the land, lumber
or other property may be disposed of in such manner as may
be prescribed by the rules and regulations of the company.
3. When the sum of five hundred dollars of the capita:
stock of the company shall have been subscribed as is pro-
vided forin the preceding section, then the said company
may organize in the manner prescribed by the Code of Vir-
ginia of eighteen hundred and seventy-three.
4. The said company shall have the right to construct and
maintain a wharf at a point on the York river, in the county
of Gloucester, known as Portan, for the accommodation of
vessels propelled by steam or otherwise, and shall have power
from time to time to fix and alter the rates and tolls as may
be determined on by the said company.
o. It shall be lawful for the said company to acquire, by
purchase or otherwise, and hold and use land, not to exceed
five acres, on which to erect warehouses, cattle pens, &c., for
the accommodation of the public, and in like manner may
acquire and maintain a roadway, not less than twenty feet
in width, from the main county road to the wharf herein
provided to be constructed.
6. This act shall be in force from its passage.
