Chap. 74.—An ACT to incorporate The Broad Creek Toll Bridge and
Turnpike Road Company.
Approved February 17, 1876.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That it shall be
lawful to open books, under the direction of Miles Selden,
O. F. Baxter, Thurmer Hoggard, G. F. B. Leighton, C. D.
Barbot, and C. W. Wilson, and such other person or persons
as any three of the above named persons may appoint; and
at such time and place as they may elect, for the purpose of
receiving subscriptions to a joint capital stock, not exceeding
in the whole twenty-five thousand dollars, to be divided into
shares of twenty dollars each, for the purpose of construct-
ing a bridge across Broad creek, at about one and a half
miles from its mouth, and a turnpike from Norfolk to the
village of Kempsville, the nearest feasible route, with the.
privilege of extending the same to the courthouse of Prin-
cess Anne county. The bridge shall be furnished with a draw
at the channel of Broad creek, which shall not be less than
sixteen feet in the clear; and the said turnpike may be con-.
structed of shell, gravel, and plank, or any other material
that the company may deem fit.
2. When four thousand dollars shall have been subscribed,
the subscribers, their executors, administrators, or assigns,
shall be and are hereby incorporated into a company by the
name and style of The Broad Creek Toll-Bridge and Turn-
pike Company, subject to the provisions of the Code and
statutes of Virginia, except so far as modified by this act:
provided, that the said subscriptions shall be paid in as may
be required by the board of directors when organized.
3. The said company shall be and they are hereby autho-
rized to erect gates at the bridge, and at no other point
nearer Norfolk, and to charge toll as follows: For each horse,
five cents for bridge, and two cents per mile for each and
every mile of turnpike; also, one cent for foot travelers
across the bridge; and when the turnpike shall be comple-
ted from Norfolk to Kempsville, the bridge toll oh horses
shall be abolished: provided, that the work be commenced
within two years, and the road completed to Kempsville
within five years.
4, This act shall be in force from its passage.
