Chap. 66.—An ACT to incorporate the Trustees of Lone Star Lodge,
Number t@igteen hundred and forty of the Grand United Order of
Odd-Fellows of the City of Richmond.

Whereas there is established in the city of Richmond, a
benevolent institution, known as Lone Star Lodge number
thirteen hundred and forty of the Grand United Order of
Odd-Fellows, which has for its object mutual aid and assist-
ance to its members in time of sickness, the burying of de-
ceased members, the support of their widows, and the educa-
tion of their orphans; and whereas, it is believed that the
facilities of the said institution, for the accomplishment of its
benevolent purposes, would be greatly promoted by obtain-
ing an act of incorporation of the trustees of the said Lone
Star Lodge number thirteen hundred and forty of the Grand
United order of Odd-Fellows: Therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
William F. Brown, Samuel S. Richardson, J. H. Sampson,
Isaiah Henderson, Benjamin R. Harris, C. A. Scott, Benjamin
Jackson, and George Harris, and their successors be and they
are hereby appointed a body politic and corporate, by the
name and style of The Trustees of Lone Star Lodge, num-
ber thirteen hundred and forty of the Grand United Order
of Odd-Fellows of the City of Richmond; and by that name
Shall have a perpetual succession and common seal; may
contract and be contracted with, sue and be sued, may ac-
quire, receive, hold, possess, and enjoy, and may rent, sell,
convey, invest, and otherwise manage or dispose of, as to
them may seem most conducive to the interest and promo-
tion of the benevolent parposes of the said Lone Star Lodge,
number thirteen hundred and forty of the United Order of
Odd-Fellows of the city of Richmond, all lands, money, or
other property, real or personal, which may have been, or
which muy be given, or otherwise acquired, for the use of
the said Lone Star Lodge, number thirteen hundred and forty
of the Grand United Order of Odd-Fellows of the city of
Richmond; and the said trustees and their successors shall
hold office as trustees no longer than they remain members
of the said Lone Star Lodge, number thirteen hundred and
forty of the Grand United Order of Odd-Fellows of the city
of Richmond, or till their successors enter upon the discharge
of their duties as trustees: provided, that the sum of money
so acquired, shall not exceed twenty thousand dollars: and
provided, that the amount of land held by them shall not
exceed a third of an acre in the city of Richmond.
2. The trustees herein named shall continue to act as such
until their successors are duly elected and enter upon ‘the
discharge of their duties as trustecs.
3. The trustees, nine in number, shall be elected annually
according to the laws and rules of the aforesaid Lone Star
Lodge, number thirteen hundred and forty of the Grand
United Order of Odd-Fellows of the city of Richmond, and
shall have power to appoint such officers as may be requisite,
and shall exact from any of them such bonds or other se-
curity in such penalty as the trustees shall direct, conditioned
for the faithful performance of their duties; and the bonds
of the secretary and treasurer of said lodge and other offi-
cers of whom bonds may be required, may be made payable
to said trustees: provided, that nothing herein contained
shall be construed as authorizing said company to establish
any lottery or gift enterprise, or to dispose of any property
by lot or chance.
4. Three trustees shall constitute a quorum for the trans-
action of business, but it shall require a majority of all the
trustees to constitute a quorum for the sale of real estate.
5. This act shall take effect from its passage, and shall be
subject to amendment, modification, or repeal, at the pleasure
of the general assembly.
