Chap. 245.—An ACT to incorporate the Surry Railroad Company.
Approved March 29, 1876.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
it shall be lawful to open books of subscription at Surry
court-house, in Surry county, under direction of E. C. Smith,
R. D. Phillips, W. 8S. Burt, J.J. Parker, J. M. Phillips, George
A. Bailey, and Mann Page, or any three of them, and at such
other place or places as a majority of the above-named per-
sons may designate, for the purpose of receiving subscriptions
to an amount not less than twenty thousand dollars nor more
than one hundred thousard dollars, in shares of one hundred
dollars each, to constitute the capital stock of a company to
be called The Surry Railroad Company, for the purpose of
constructing a railroad or tram-road, to work by steam, of
such gauge as the company may select, from Low Point, on
Upper Chipoax creek, in Surry county, to some point on the
Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio railroad, in the county of Sus-
sex, or to some point on Blackwater river, as the stockhold-
holders may determine.
2. That the said company shall have the right to hold and
employ such machinery and other appliances as their busi-
ness may require, and are hereby vested with all the rights
and privileges conferred, and subject to all the restrictions
imposed by laws of the state upon bodies politic and corpo-
rate, so far as the same are applicable to and not inconsistent
with this act.
3. That the said company shall have power to borrow
money on its bonds or other evidence of debt, to an amount
not exceeding the capital stock, bearing interest at a rate not
exceeding that allowed by law, which bonds may be secured
by a pledge of the income and property of said road.
4, That said company is hereby authorized to receive and
hold land, or other species of property, in payment of sub-
scriptions to the capital stock, and to convey and otherwise
dispose of the same: provided, that they shall not at any one
time hold real estate to exceed in value the amount of the
capital stock of said company. | |
5. The work on the proposed road herein authorized to be
constructed, shall be commenced within one year from the
passage of this act, and be completed within the period of
six years.
6. This act shall be in force from its passage.
