Chap. 231.—An ACT to Incorporate the Virginia Baptist Historical
Society.
Approved March 29, 1876.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
J. B. Jeter, J. R. Garlick, J. L. M. Curry, Charles H. Ryland,
F. M. Latham, Thomas 8. Dunaway, John R. Bagby, H. H.
Harris, James A. Haynes, Thomas Hume, Charles B. Fleet,
John W. McCown, Willian S. Penick, James T. Borum, S.
P. Huff, William S. Bland, J. B. Lake, James A. Davis, R.
L. T. Beale, John R. Nuno, Joseph A. Turner, W. R. D. Mon-
cure, James M. Broadus, J. H. Newbill, A. B. Clarke, D. G.
Potts, Robert Williamson, Colin Bass, William H. Gwathmey
and John F. Tanner, and any others that may from time to
time be associated with them, and their successors, be and
are hereby incorporated and made a body politic, by the
name and style of The Virginia Baptist Historical Society,
and shall have perpetual succession, for the purpose of dis-
covering, procuring and preserving whatever may relate to
the history of christianity, and of the Baptist denomination
in Virginia in particular. :
2. The said society may have acommon seal; may contract
and be contracted with; sue and be sued; may acquire, re-
ceive, hold, possess and enjoy; and may rent, sell, convey,
invest, and otherwise manage or dispose of all lands, money
or other property, real or personal, which may be given or
otherwise acquired for the use of said society: provided, the
sum of money or other property so given or acquired shall
not exceed in value thirty thousand dollars.
3. The said society shall have the power to elect such offi-
cers, enact such by-laws, rules and regulations as may be
deemed necessary or expedient for the organization of the
society, and the efficient working of the same, and which
shall not be repugnant to the laws of this commonwealth.
4, This act shall be in force from its passage.
