Chap. 80.—An ACT to Incorporate the Town of Big Lick.
Approved February 28, 1874.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the town of Big Lick, in the county of Roanoke, as the same
heretofore has been, or may hereafter be, laid off into lots,
streets and alleys, shall be and the same is hereby made a
town corporate, by the name of the Town of Big Lick; and
by that name shall have and exercise the powers conferred
upon towns, by the fifty-fourth chapter of the Code of Vir-
ginia, of eighteen hundred and seventy-three, and of all laws
now in force, or that hereafter may be enacted, for the gov-
ernment of towns containing less than five thousand in-
habitants.
2. The boundaries of said town shall be: Commencing at
the depot of the Atlantic, Mississippi and Obio railroad, in
said town, and extending therefrom one-half mile, north,
south, east and west, and embracing the area contained
therein, with the exception of the lands of Mrs. Jane Lewis,
which shall be excluded from said corporation.
3. John Trout is hereby appointed mayor of said town,
and Ferdinand Rivers, John M. Ferguson, Peyton L. Terry,
James M. Gambill, Doctor James McG. Kent and William
Raines, are hereby appointed councilmen thereof, any three
of whom shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of bu-
siness. The said mayor and council shall have power to levy
such taxes as they may deem necessary for the purposes of
said corporation, as is allowed by existing laws: provided,
that no tax upon the real and personal property in said cor-
poration shall exceed the amount of twenty-five cents upon
the one hundred dollars assessed value thereof; and they
shall also have power to appoint a sergeant, and such other
officers as may be necessary, who shall remain in office until
the first day of July, eighteen hundred and seventy-four, or
until their successors are appointed and qualified according
to law. ,
4. The said mayor and councilmen abovenamed and ap-
pointed in this act, shall continue in office until the first day
of July, eighteen hundred and seventy-four, and thereafter
until their succcssors shal] be’elected and qualified according
to law.
5. This act shall be in force from its passage.
