Chap. 259.—An ACT to amend an Act to incorporate the Town of Rocky
Mount, in the County of Franklin, in force February 17th, 1878.
Approved April 28, 1874.
1. Bo it enacted by the general assembly, That the town of
Rocky Mount, in the county of Franklin, as the same has
heretofore been, or may hereafter be, laid off into lots, streets
and alleys, shall be and the same is hereby made a town cor-
porate, by the name of the Town of Rocky Mount; and by
that name shall have and exercise the powers conferred upon
towns by the fifty-fourth chapter of the Code of Virginia,
(edition of eighteen bundred and sixty,) so far as the same
is in force; and shall be subject to and governed by all laws
now in force, or which may hereafter -pass, for the govern-
mtnt of towns containing less than five thousand inhabitants.
2. The boundaries of the town shall be one-fourth of a mile
from the courthouse building, in said town, extending east,
west, north and south, and embracing the area contained
therein, so as to make said area one-half of a mile square.
3. There shall be a board of trustees for said town, who
shall compose the council, a majority of whom shall consti-
tute a quorum for the transaction of business; and the fol-
lowing named persons shall constitute the board of trustees,
to wit: Giles W. B. Hale, Hughes Dillard, Thomas B. Greer,
John J. Saunders, William E. Andrews, Hugh Nelson and
Robert A. Scott, to hold their offices until their successors
are elected and qualified according to law.
4. The trustees shall have power to select, from their own
body, a presiding officer, who shall act as mayor of the town,
and appoint w town sergeant, and such other officers as they
may think necessary, together with a police force, for the
proper government of the town.
