Chap. 198.—An ACT to Authorize the Trustees of the German Chapel
of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in Petersburg, Virginia, to
borrow money and execute a deed of trust to secure the same.

Preamble Whereas it is represented to the general assembly that a
religious congregation in the city of Petersburg, composed of
German members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South,
have purchased and own a lot or parcel of land in said city,
accurately described in a deed, bearing date the ninth day of
May, anno domini eighteen ‘hundred and seventy-two, exe-

corded in the clerk’s office of the hustings court of Peters-
burg; and have erected on said land a church, or house for
religious worship, and in so doing have incurred debts amount-
ing to about six hundred dollars, which they wish to pay,
and expect to pay by voluntary contributions to be made by
said congregation and other members of the Methodist Epis-
copal Church, South; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That it shall be
lawful for the said trustees, or a majority of them, to borrow
the sum of six hundred dollars, and to execute to the lender
or lenders thereof a note or notes signed by them as such
trustees, and to secure the same by executing a deed of trust
conveying said land the buildings thereon to a trustee, to be
held by him in trust, first, to secure the payment of said loan
and interest, and all lawful charges incident thereto; and
secondly, after payment of said loan and interest and charges,
in trust to be conveyed to such trustees as may be appointed
by the circuit court of the city of Petersburg, on the appli-
cation of the proper authorities of said congregation, in ac-
cordance with the rules, usages and discipline of the Metho-
dist Episcopal Church, South, to hold said property for the
use and benefit of said congregation, in the manner and ac-
cording to the form prescribed by the discipline of said Meth-
odist Episcopal Church, South.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
