Chap. 195.—An AQT to Permit the People of Northumberland County
to Vote on the Disposition of the Glebe Fund. ,
Approved April 15, 1874. __
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
it shall be the duty of the several officers conducting elections
in the county of Northumberland, at the times and places
for holdin the general election on the first Tuesday after
the first Monday in November, eighteen hundred and seventy-
four, to prepare a separate ballot-box for each voting precinct,
in which shall be deposited the ballots of the then qualified
voters who shall desire to vote upon the question of the ap-
plication of the glebe fund of said county to the building of
public school houses in said county. Notices of such election
shall be posted at each election precinct in said county for at
least thirty days before the day of election. The said ballots
shall be respectively as follows:
b For applying the glebe fund to the building of public school
ouses.
Against applying the glebe fund to the building of public
school houses.
Each ballot so cast, which shall have written or printed
thereon, for applying the glebe fund to the building of public
school houses, shall be taken and counted as a vute for apply-
ing the glebe fund to the building of public school houses;
and such ballots.so cast which shall have written or printed
thereon, against applying the glebe fund to the building of
public school houses, shall be taken and counted as a vote
against said application.
_ 2, The manner of receiving and canvassing the ballots cast
‘at such election of the question of applying the glebe fund
to the building of public school houses, and making returns
and abstracts of the results thereof, shall conform in all re-
spects to the. regulations prescribed by the general election
law of this state, except that the certificate of the judges of
election shall be as follows:
We hereby certify that at the election held —— votes were
cast “for applying glebe fund to the building of public school
houses,” an votes were cast “against applying glebe
fund to building of public school houses.”

And provided further, that the commissioners of election
shall make, on a separate sheet, an abstract of said votes for
and against such application, which abstracts shall be duly
signed by said commissioners and deposited in the office of
the clerk of the county court of said county.
3. And if, from such returns and abstracts of votes, it shall
appear that a majority of the registered voters of said county
have voted in favor of applying the fund to the aforesaid
purpose, then it shall be the duty of the court to enter upon
its records an order requiring the trustees to apply the glebe
fund to the building of public school houses; but if a majority
of the registered voters shall vote against said application,
then said fund shall continue as heretofore.
4, This act shall be in force from its passage.
