Chap. 136.—An ACT to Incorporate the St. George’s Benevolent So-
ciety of Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Approved April 2, 1874.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That Reverend
Edmund C. Murdaugh, John Coakley, John James Young,
William H. Fitzhugh, Fayette W. Johnston, William S. Bar-
ton, James Taylor, Elliott M. Braxton, James F. Thompson,
David S. Forbes, Randolph C. Fitzhugh, Charles E. Tackett,
A. W. Wallace, Bazil Gordon, Jr., R. C. L. Moncure, J. G.
Mason, John T. Goolrick, Joseph B. Ficklen, George B. Scott,
M. Slaughter, A. K. Phillips, and such other persons as are
now or may hereafter be associated with them, be, and they
are hereby incorporated and made a body politic, under the
title of the Saint George’s Benevolent Society of Fredericks-
burg, Virginia, and as such shall have power to sue and be Corpor
sued. contract and be contracted with, and to hold, buy, sell, °*
or lease real and personal property in or near said town of
Fredericksburg: provided, that it shall not hold or possess, Proper
at any one time, property to an amount exceeding one hun- ‘4
dred thousand dollars.
2. That for the purpose of benefitting the poor of said Power:
town of Fredericksburg, and assisting needy widows and $24>0
orphans, the said society may receive and hold such dona- quests
tions or bequests as may be made to it by charitably disposed
persons; and with the proceeds of such donations or bequests,
or with means furnished by its own members, may make such provisi
provision for the poor of said town of Fredericksburg as said Poor of
society may deem proper for their relief.
3. That for more effectually carrying out the purposes and May es
objects of said society, (that. 1s, benefitting the poor of said mYone
town,) it is authorized and empowered, if it think proper to ®chools,
do so, out of the contributions made by its members and such widows
donations or bequests as may be from time to time made to Ph#=s
it by charitably disposed persons, to establish asylums for
aged persons or for poor widows or orphans, reformatories
or schools, and support and manage the same.
4. That said society may make such rules and regulations Rulesa
for its own government, or for that of the asylums, reforma- \#tions:
tories or schools under its charge, as it may from time to time
think proper: provided, the same be not in conflict with the
Constitution and laws of the United States or the constitu-
tion and laws of this commonwealth.
5. The said society shall hold all donations or bequests How so
made to it, upon the trusts, conditions, and stipulations speci- or bene
fied in the instrument making or creating such donation or
devise: provided, the same be within the general scope and
object of said society.
° 6. This act shall be subject to modification or amendment, Charter
at the pleasure of the general assembly, and to all general pate!
laws now in force, or which may hereafter be passed, in rela-
tion to incorporated companies of like character.
