Chap. 79.—An ACT to incorporate The British Association of Virginia
Approved February 5, 1875.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That John
Stewart, Frederick R. Scott, John Dunlop, Robert J. Farrar,
Henry Wall, D. D., William Milnes, J. A. H. St. Andrew,
Charles Bugg, Alexander Whitehead, Henry Bowler, John
Trotter, A. C. Clift, Joseph Smith, Jefferson Tacey, William
Adamson, Peyton Johcston, Philip Hathaway, Thomas P.
Jackson, and such others as may be associated with them,
and thcir successors, shall be, and they are hereby incorpo-
rated, and made a body politic and corpurate, under the
name and style of The British Association of Virginia, the
objects of such association being to promote social union and
mutual assistance among settlers and intending settlers, who
may be or have been subjects of Her Britannic Majesty; to
collect. compile, and publish information.in regard to the
various sections of Virginia, which may be of use to British
m migrants.
2. The said corporation shall have perpetual succession
and a common seal, may sue and be sued, plead and be im-
pleaded, contract and be contracted with, shall have power
to make or adopt a constitution and by-laws, rules and regu-
lations for the admission and expulsion of its members and
their government; the election of its officers and the defini-
tion of their duties, and for the safe-keeping and use of its
property and funds; and from time to time to amend such
constitution, and to alter or rescind such by-laws, rules and
regulations; and generally to do every act and thing neces-
sary to carry into effect this act, or to promote the objects
and designs of the said corporation: provided, the same be
not in conflict with the constitution and laws of tho state or
the United States.
_ 3. Tho porsons named in the first section of this act shall
be the officers of the said corporation until others are elected.
4. The said corporation may receive, purchase or lease,
and hold any real or personal property, not to exceed ten
thousand dollars in valuc; and may also lease, rent, sell or
otherwise dispose of the said property, or any part thereof,
as shall be deemed best for the good of the said corporation.
5. This act shall be subjegt to repeal, alteration or amend-
ment by the general assembly. .
6. This act shall be in force from its passage.
