Chap. 168.—An ACT to incorporate the Royal Arch Masons’ Hall and
Library Association of Farmville, Virginia.

Whereas, it is represented that 8. W. Paulett, J. A. H. St.
Andrew, R. A. Booker, C. Bugg, N. Hf. Champlin, C. C. Far-
ley, B. S. Hooper, J. R. Cunningham, E. Allan, O. T. Wicker,
D. 8. Russell, and others, have associated themselves for the
purpose of disposing of certain real and personal estate to
the best advantage, the Proceeds arising therefrom to be de-
voted to the erection and completion of the Masonic hall, in
the town of Farmville, Virginia, and to the establishment of
a public library for the use of the citizens of said town; and
believing that, by prompt and judicious measures, the object .
in view can be accomplished, to effect which corporate priv-
ileges and facilities are deemed expedient; therefore,
_ 1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
tho persons above named, and such others not exceeding
eleven in number, as may kereafter be associated with them
under this charter, be and they are hereby created a body
politic and corporate, under the name and style of The Royal
Arch Masons’ Hall and Library Association of Farmville,
Virginia, for the purpose of erecting a public hall, and estab-
lishing a public library in the town of Farmville; and to that
end all the estate, real and .personal, now held or hereafter
acquired by them for that purpose, whether by purchase,
gift, devise, or donation in any way, is hereby vested in said
corporation for the purposes and objects aforesaid: provided.
that the amount of property held at any one time shall not
exceed in value one hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
. The real estate devoted to the purposes of this charter
shail be conveyed and held in trust for the use and benefit
of the Farmville Royal Arch Chapter, number forty-seven,
with the reservation that the right and title to use, occupy,
enjoy, and absolutely control the second story of the build-
ing erected thereon, shall forever be and remain in the mayor
and council of the town of Farmville, to be used by them as
a public hall and library.
3. The said co rporation is hereby invested with power to
bay, sell, and deal in real and personal property, and upon
such terms and in such manner as to them shall seem most
expedient and best calculated to effect the objects and pur-
poses aforesaid. The said corporation imay sell at private
sale, or expose to -publie auction, or dispose of in such other
manner as to them shall seem judicious, all or any part of
their real and personal estate: provided, that the property
to be held and owned by the said company, shall not be ex-
empt from any tax imposed by the laws of the state on other
property of similar character; nor shall anything herein
contained be construed as exempting the said company from
any license tax required by the gencral law: provided, that
notbing herein contained shall ‘be construed as authorizing
the said corporation to engage in or carry on any business
contrary to the constitution and laws of this state, or of the
United States.
4. This act shall be in force from its passage, and subject
to amendment or repeal at the pleasure of the gencral assem-
bly.
