Chap. 135.—An ACT to incorporate the Saint Joseph Lodge, 1382,
of the Grand United Order of Odd-Fellows, in the City of Petersburg.
Approved March 1, 1875.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia,
That James R. Stokes, James M. Wilkerson, George F.
Bragg, Simon Boyd, Elijah Eley, P. W. Bragg, J. J. Cain, J.
H. Oliver, Madison Hendley, W. H. Grammer, Berry Hicks,
William Freeland, P.-B. Ramsey, J..M. Brown, J. P. Evans,
R. H. Hampton, W. A. Grigg, W. A. Steward, and all others
who now are, or may hereafter become members of the
lodge, be and they are hereby made a body politic and cor-
porate by the name and style of The Saint Joseph Lodge,
thirteen hundred and eighty-two, of the Grand United Order
of Odd-Fellows, in the city of Petersburg, Virginia, and by
that name shall have perpetual succession and a common
seal, may sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, with
power to purchase, receive, and hold to them and their suc-
cessors forever, any lot or lots of land in or near the said
city of Pétersburg, upon which to erect a suitable building
in which to hold its meetings, not exceeding two acres of
land, together with such personal estate as may be necessary
for beneficial purposes of said society: provided, that the
lands, goods, and chattels, so authorized to be held, shall not
exceed in amount or value fifty thousand dollars.
2. Said lodge shall have power to make such constitution,
by-laws, and regulations for the government cf said lodge,
and the execution of its objects, not inconsistent with the
laws of this state or of the United States.
3. The treasurer shall receive all moneys accruing to the
lodge and property delivered to his care. Before entering
on the discharge of his duties he shall give bond, with such
security and in such penalty as the lodge may direct, made
ayable to the lodge, and conditioned for the faithful per-
ormance of his duties; and the lodge may obtain a judg-
ment for the amount thereof, or for any special delinquencies
of the treasurer, on motion in any court of record against
the said treasurer and his securities, his or their executors
or administrators, upon giving ten days’ previous notice of
such motion. . . |
4. The legislature reserves the right to modify or repeal
this act at pleasure.
5. This act shall be in force from its passage.
