Chap. 392.—An ACT in Relation to the Norfolk and Southern Railroad
Company:
Approved April 2, 1873.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That for the pur-
pose of enabling the Norfolk and Southern Railroad Company
to unite with the Wilmington and Planters Railway Company
of North Carolina and the Charleston, Georgetown and Con-
wayboro Railroad Company of South Carolina in the construc-
tion of a line of railway from Norfolk, in this state, to or near
Charleston, in South Carolina, and for the purpose of enabling
the said corporations to make and use a capital stock, to secure,
issue and negotiate their mortgage bonds, and other evidences
of debt, and to construct, maintain and operate their railway
under a common name or title, the said Norfolk and Southern
Railroad Company is hereby authorized and empowered, at any
time during the continuance of its charter, to unite and con-
solidate and to merge its capital stock, property, franchises and
railway with those of the corporations hereinbefore mentioned,
or either of them, upon such terms and conditions as may be
agreed upon by the board of directors.
2. Be it enacted, That whenever such consolidation and
merger shall be made and a certificate to that effect filed with
the secretary of state, this corporation shall be known by such
name as the said consolidated company may adopt and file as
aforesaid, and under such new name shall succeed to and enjoy
all the rights, privileges, franchises and immunities granted by
the charter of the Norfolk and Southern Railroad Company.
3. Be it enacted, That the said company be and is hereby p
authorized to extend, construct, maintain and operate its line {
of railway from the city of Norfolk, northward to any point or L
place on the shore or coast at or near Lynn Haven bay, and;
from such point or place to construct, maintain and- operate a ¥
steam ferry across the intervening water to some suitable point 4}
or place on the shore or coast in Northampton county, and “
from thence to continue its line of railway to the state line of:
Maryland, in the county of Accomac, the particular route and .
places to be fixed and determined by the board of directors.
4. This act shall be in force from its passage. | C
