Chap. 356.—An A€T to Establish a High School in the Town of Jeffer-
sonville, and to Constitute said Town and the County for Three Miles
around the same a Sub-School District, and for other purposes.
Approved April 2, 1873.
Whereas, it is desirable and expedient that there should be
established in the town of Jeffersonville a high school in which
shall be taught the languages and higher mathematics in con-
nection with a public free school; and whereas, for the pur-
pose of establishing such school special legislation is necessary :
now, therefore, |
xr- 1. Beit enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
i for the purpose heretofore set forth, the town of Jeffersonville.
ct and the county within a radius of three miles from the centre
thereof shall constitute a sub-school district.
2. G. H. Reed, I. KE. Chapman, J. Stras, A. P. Brown, J. P.
4 Kelley, A. J. May and W. W. Peery, and their successors, are
hereby constituted and made a body politic and corporate, by
the name of the Trustees of the Tazewell High School, by
ars which name they shall have perpetual successiod ; may sue and
be sued, contract and be contracted with, and have and use a
common seal, with power to purchase, receive and hold lands
and tenements, money, goods and chattels, to an amount not
exceeding twenty thousand dollars. :
o $3. The county school board of Tazewell county may (a ma-
p jority of said board concurring) donate to said body politic out
1 of the public school money belonging to said county the sum
es Of seven hundred dollars, to be applied by said corporation to
lle the purchase of land and house for said school purposes in the
town of Jeffersonville. _
4. There shall be taught annually in said school-house a
°l nublic free school for such time as the public free school
money, allotted annually to said district and such other funds
as. may be secured by subscription or otherwise for that pur-
pose, shall defray the expenses thereof.
001 5. The common council of the town of Jeffersonville, a ma-
| jority of the members of said council concurring, may annually
levy and appropriate for the support of said free school a tax
on all the taxable property within said town not exceeding two
mills on the dollar, and a capitation tax on all voters in said
town not exceding fifty cents.
6. The said trustees, or a majority of them, shall choose an-
nually by ballot a board of directors, of not less than five nor
more than thirteen members, who, together with the president
of said board, shall select their own officers, including a secre-
tary and treasurer, and such agents and teachers as may be
deemed necessary, and to whom shall be confided the general
management of the institution during their term of office.
_, The superintendent of the common school of Tazewell county
i shall be ex-officio the president of the board of directors.
7. The board of directors shall take bond from the treasurer,

payable to the trustees of the Tazewell High School, in such B
penalty and with such security as they may deem reasonable, *
conditioned for the faithful discharge of the duties of his office.
8. When there shall be a vacancy in the board of trustees, v
occasioned by death, resignation, removal or otherwise, the §,
remaining trustees, or a majority of them, shall, after being
notified by the president or secretary, at least thirty days pre-
viously, proceed to supply such vacancy. The trustees shall M
meet semi-annually, or whenever a majority of their number
shall deem it necessary.
9. The board of trustees of this institution shall consist of Br
not less than five, nor more than thirteen members, a majority
of whom shall constitute a quorum. Q
10. The trustees may adopt such constitution, rules, regula- c.
tions and by laws, not contrary to the laws of this state nor of *
the United States, as they may deem necessary for the good
of the institution.
11. Any property held by the Tazewell High School for its P:
legitimate purposes shall be exempt from public taxes so long «,
as any property held by any institutions of learning in the ta
state for legitimate purposes shall be exempt; and whenever
any tax shall be laid upon the same, it shall not exceed the tax
which may be laid on similar institutions in the state.
