Chap. 308.—An ACT to Amend and Re-enact an Act passed March 14,
1860, entitled an Act to Incorporate the Branch Coal Mining Com-
pany.
Approved March 31, 1873.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the first, second and third sections of the act passed March
fourteenth, eighteen hundred and sixty, entitled an act to in-
corporate the Branch Coal Mining Company, in the county of
Powhatan, be amended and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
$1. That Semple Ellett, William R. Poindexter, Otis P.
Ellett, R. B. Gilman, Matthew Brown, and such other persons
as may be hereafter associated with them, shall be and they
are hereby incorporated and made a body corporate, by the
name of the Branch Coal Mining and Manufacturing Com-
pany, for the purpose of mining for coal and other minerals ;
and manufacturing and selling goods made of wool and cotton,
and for grinding wheat and other grain, and transporting the
same to market in and from the county of Powhatan; and they
are hereby invested with all the rights, privileges and powers
conferred, and made subject to all the rules, regulations and
restrictions imposed, by the fifty-sixth and fifty-seventh chap-
ters of the Code of Virginia, so far as the same are not incon-
sistent with this act.
§2. That the capital stock of said company shall not be less
than fifteen thousand dollars nor more than one hundred thou-
sand dollars, to be divided into shares of fifty dollars each ; and
the said company shall have the right to purchase and hold
lands, not exceeding one thousand acres at any one time, in
the county of Powhatan.
§ 3. That it shall be lawful for the said company to construct
on their own lands, and for their own purposes, a railroad or a
canal from any point on their own lands to James river, by
condemning the same according to law.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage, and shall be
subject to amendment, alteration or modification at the plea-
sure of the General Assembly. .
