Chap. 297.—An ACT to Amend and Re-enact an Act approved March
'13th, 1872, entitled an Act for the Relief of the late Sheriffs of Pittsylvania County.
Approved March 29, 1878.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That the first sec-
tion of an act entitled an act for the relief of. the late sheriffs
of Pittsylvania county, approved March the thirteenth, eigh-
teen hundred and seventy-two, be amended and re-enacted so
as to read as follows:
$1. That the late sheriffs of Pittsylvania county be and
they are hereby authorized to receive and collect all taxes, fee
bills, muster fines, and county levies, which were due in the
years eighteen hundred and sixty-one, eighteen hundred and
sixty-two, eighteen hundred and sixty-three, and eighteen
hundred and sixty-four, and are still unpaid; and they shall
hereby possess the same legal right in the collection of the
same that they had or possessed at the periods hereinbefore
mentioned: provided, that the taxes, fee bills, muster fines,
and county levies, due in the years eighteen hundred and sixty-
two, eighteen hundred and sixty-three and eighteen hundred
and sixty-four, shall be adjusted and liquidated in accordance
with the provisions of an act passed March third, eighteen
hundred and sixty-six, entitled an act providing for the adjust-
ment of liabilities arising under contraets and wills made be-
tween the first day of January, eighteen hundred and sixty-
two, and the tenth day of April, eighteen hundred and sixty-five,
as amended by an act passed February twenty-eight, eighteen
hundred and sixty-seven; and provided further, that when
property, the subject of such taxes and county levies, due in
the years eighteen hundred and sixty-one, eighteen hundred
and sixty-two, eighteen hundred and sixty-three and eighteen
hundred and sixty-four, and unpaid as first aforesaid, shall
have been aliened after the accruing of such taxes and county
levies thereon, and before the passage of this act, such pro-
perty shall not be made liable for such taxes and county levies,
nor shall the alienee or any occupier thereof, nor shall the pro-
sperty of such alienee or occupier thereof be held liable for or
be subjected to the payment of such taxes and county levies;
said right shall continue one year from the passage of this act:
provided, that no such sheriff shall be entitled to the benefit
of this act who has not fully paid and discharged all accounts
and liabilities charged against him upon the books of the au-
ditor of this state; and provided further, that where a sheriff
having such taxes, fee bills, muster fines, and county levies due
him, shall have departed this life, it shall be lawful for his per-
sonal representative to place them in the hands of the sheriff
of his county, who shall collect the same according to the
provisions of this act.
' 2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
