Chap. 253.—An ACT to Incorporate the Dismal Swamp [Lu nber
Company.
Approved March 27, 1873.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That r
Robert M. Darden, E. C. Riddick, Amos B. Badger, John R. ¢
Kilby, W. H. Eley, E. F. Williamson, D. W. Duke, W. B.
Wellons and John F. Pinner, and such other persons as may
be associated with them, shall be and are hereby incorporated
and made a body politic and corporate, by the name and style
of the Dismal Swamp Lumber Company, for the purpose of
manufacturing lumber, cutting wood, and dealing in the same;
and by that name shall be sued and may sue, and have a com-
mon seal.
2. That the said company shall have power to build tram rp
roads along any public road in Nansemond county, under the ®
direction of the county court of said county, as provided for by r
law, and may cross the lands of individuals or companies, and
condemn a right of way for that purpose in the same manner E
as railroad companies are now authorized to do; and shall have {
power to run a tram road from some point on the western
shore of Lake Drummond towards Somerton, in said county,
and to own and use on said road a steam locomotive or other
power for the transportation of their lumber and wood.
3. That the said company may own lighters, boats and ves-
sels to transport their lumber and wood to market, and may
purchase land not exceeding one thousand acres in said county
at any one time, and may re-sell the same, and may erect one
or more saw mills, and purchase timber, wood and sawed lum-
ber to carry on their business.
4. The capital stock of said company shall be not less than
five thousand dollars, nor more than twenty thousand dollars,
in shares of one hundred dollars each.
5. The provisions of chapter sixty-six and sixty-seven of the
Code of Virginia (edition of eighteen hundred and sixty) shall
be applicable to said company so far as consistent with the
purposes of this act.
6. The said company shall have power to build all necessary
wharves on Lake Drummond for the proper and successful
management of their business, and to condemn land enough
for that purpose, not exceeding three acres.
7. This act shall be in force from and after its passage.
