Chap. 224.—An ACT to Amend and Re-enact the first and fifth Sections
of the Act entitled an Act to Incorpurate the Virginia and Northwest-
ern Railroad Company.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That c
the first and fifth sections of an act entitled an act to incorpo- §
rate the Virginia and Northwestern Railroad Company be :
amended and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
§ 1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That

Hume, George W. Mitchell, of Green county; John F. ‘Lewis, P
J. D. Price, S. R. Allebaugh, Algernon 8S. Gray, Jacob L. Si-—
bert, John F. Crawn, Peter S. Roller, Joseph S. Loose, of Rock-
ingham county ; Homer A. Holt, James A. Woodsel, of West
Virginia, and H. B. Huffman and L. R. Hummel, of Pennsy]l-
vania, or such of them as may accept the provisions of this
act, and such persons and corporations as may become asso-
ciated with them in the manner hereinafter provided, shall be
and they are hereby constituted a body politic and corporate,
by the name of the Virginia and Northwestern Railroad Com-
pany, and by that name shall have all the powers, rights and c
franchises necessary and proper to locate, construct and main-
tain a railroad to be known as the Virginia and Northwestern
Railroad, to begin at Gordonsville, on the Chesapeake and Ohio
Railroad, in the county of Orange, and to run thence by the
most practicable route through the county of Rockingham to
some point on the Virginia and West Virginia state line, whence
the said road may be extended through the state of West Vir-
ginia in such direction as to secure the most practicable route
from Virginia to the Northwest, with a branch from some point
on said road, west of the Blue Ridge, to the northern boundary
of Virginia: provided, that the said railroad company shall not p
locate or construct their road through North River Gap, in
Augusta county, that being the line surveyed and adopted by
the Washington, Cincinnati and St.’ Louis Railroad Company,
without the consent of said company.
§ 5. The said railroad company shall have power to build p
branch and lateral roads, not exceeding ten miles each in “
length, from their main line, to connect with any mines, lands,
works or manufactories owned or operated by the said com-
pany. There need be no notice of the opening of the books of x
subscription, and the said company may be organized when- }t
ever fifty shares of stock shall have been subscribed by per- w
sons or corporations other than internal improvement compa- ,,
nies. The term of office of the president and directors shall iz
be one year: provided, that upon the organization of the com- oj
pany, the president and directors may be elected for a term of %
three years. The said company may begin the construction of y
their road at such point upon the line of the route as they ™
may find most convenient and practicable.

2. This act shall be in force from and after the first day of
September, eighteen hundred and seventy-three.
