Chap. 142.—An ACT to Incorporate the Masonic Relief Assoc‘ation of
the City of Norfolk.
Approved March 8, 1873.
Whereas, it is represented that John L. Roper, James Y.
Leigh, William H. Wales, M. H. Stevens, George S. Oldfield,
John T. Redmond, William S. Wilkerson, John B. Corprew,
John Rosson, D. Husted, S. Weil and others have associated
themselves for the purpose of disposing of certain real and
personal estate to the best advantage, the proceeds arising
therefrom to be devoted to the erection and completion of the
Masonic Temple, on Freemason street, in the city of Norfolk,
already in course of construction by the Masonic Building As-
sociation of the city of Norfolk, who, for want of necessary
means, have been greatly embarrassed; and believing that by
prompt and judicious measures the object in view can be ac-
complished, to effect which corporate privileges and facilities
are deemed expedient :
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That.
the persons above named, and such others as may hereafter be
associated with them under this charter, be and they are hereby
created a body politic and corporate under the name and style
of The Masonic Relief Association of the city of Norfolk, for
the purpose of erecting and completing the Masonic Temple
on Freemason street, in the city of Norfolk; and to that end
all the estate, real and personal, now held by them, for the pur-
pose aforesaid, or hereafter acquired therefor, whether by pur-
chase, gift, devise or donation in any way, is hereby vested in
said corporation for the purposes and objects aforesaid: pro-.
vided that the amount of property held at any one time shall
not exceed in value offe hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
2. The said corporation is hereby invested with power to
buy, sell and deal in real and personal property, and upon
such terms and in such manner as to them shall seem most
expedient and best calculated to effect the objects and pur-
poses aforesaid. The said corporation may sell at private sale
or expose to public auction, or in such other manner as to
them shall seem judicious, all or any part of their real and
personal estate, so that nothing shall be done or performed in
conflict with, or violation of, the provisions of the constitution
and laws of Virginia: provided, that the property to be held
and owned by the said company shall not be exempt from any
tax imposed by the laws of the state on other property of
similar character ; nor shall anything herein contained be con-
strued as exempting the said company from any license-tax re-
quired by the general law.
3. This act shall be in force from its passage, and subject to
amendment or repeal at the pleasure of the general assembly.
