Chap. 337.—An ACT Continuing in Force the Corporation of the Town
of Pearisburg, County of Giles, and Defining and Prescribing the
Rights and Powers thereof.
Approved March 25, 1872.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the corporation heretofore created by act of the general assem-
bly, passed the seventh day of February, eighteen hundred and
thirty-five, by the name and style of the town of Pearisburg,
in the county of Giles, is hereby continued in force by said
name and with the powers and authority as hereinafter pro-
vided.
2. Be it further enacted, That said corporation shall be gov-
erned by the provisions of the fifty-fourth chapter of the Code
of Virginia, edition of eighteen hundred and sixty, as amended
by the act approved November fifth, eighteen hundred and
seventy, entitled an act for the government of towns of less
than five thousand inhabitants, and shall possess and may
exercise all the rights, privileges and powers conferred by said
chapter and the general laws therein referred to, as amended
as aforesaid, except that no tax shall be levied for any one
year greater than the rate of tax on the like subjects imposed
by the revenue laws of the commonwealth, and the tax that
may be levied by the townships under the general law for road
purposes: provided, however, that the council of said town
may every year, by a vote of two-thirds of its body, submit to
the qualified voters of the corporation, at the regular election
for corporation officers, the question of tax, not exceeding a
like amount, on the same subjects of taxation, shall be levied
for one year, to be appropriated exclusively to the furnishing’
said town with an adequate supply of good water, and if two-
thirds of those voting shall be in favor of said tax, then said
council may levy the same for said year, to be used exclusively
for said purpose.
3. Be it further enacted, That the council of said town, in
addition to said powers hereinbefore conferred, shall have
power to distribute the water in said town, and shall have
power to extend the limits of the corporation, with the con-
sent of the owners of the property embraced in said extension.
4. Be it further enacted, That the act passed the seventh
day of February, eighteen hundred and thirty-five, prescribing
the mode of electing trustees for the town of Pearisburg, in
the county of Giles, and vesting them with corporate powers,
&e., and the act amendatory thereof, passed the eighteenth of
March, eighteen hundred and fifty, be and are hereby repealed.
