Chap. 329.—An ACT to Authorize the Lynchburg Agricultural and Me-
chanical Society to Appoint Police, &c.
Approved March 23, 1872.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That the executive
committee of the Lynchburg Agricultural. and Mechanical So-
ciety of this state is hereby authorized to appoint as many
citizens of this state policemen as shall be necessary for their
exhibitions, whose duty it shall be to preserve order within
and for one quarter of a mile around the grounds of said
society; protect their property; to eject all persons who shall
be improperly within the grounds of said society, or who shall
be guilty of disorderly conduct, or who shall neglect or refuse
to pay the fee or observe the rules prescribed by the society.
Said policemen shall have the same power during the time
said exhibitions shall continue, and for two days immediately
preceding and succeeding the same, that a constable may have
by law in serving criminal process and in making arrests, and in
addition, may arrest any person for the commission of any
offence mentioned in section three of this act.
2. The president and each member of the executive com-
mittee are hereby invested with all the authority and powers
of conservators of the peace while the said exhibitions may
continue, and for two days immediately preceding and suc-
ceeding the same; but the powers and authority herein con-
ferred shall be limited to the fair grounds and for one quarter
of a mile around said grounds.
3. Any person who shall wilfully injure or destroy the pro-
perty of the exhibitors, visitors or lessees in the fair grounds,
or shall hinder or obstruct the officers and police in the per-
formance of their duties, or shall wrongfully or maliciously
gain admission to the fair grounds contrary to the rules of
said socicty, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and
upon conviction, shall be subject to a fine of not less than one
nor more than twenty-five dollars, or imprisonment not exceed-
ing thirty days, at the discretion of the court before whom the
offender may be tried; and all fines imposed and collected
under this section shall be immediately paid into the treasury
of the state.
4. This act shall be in force from its passage.
