Chap. 288.—An ACT to Incorporate the Town of Dumfries, in the County
of Prince William.
In force March 22, 1872.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That the town of
Dumfries, in the county of Prince William, as the same has
been heretofore laid off into lots, streets and alleys, shall be
and the same is hereby made a town corporate, by the name
of the town of Dumfries, and by that name shall have and
exercise the powers conferred upon towns by the fifty-fourth
chapter of Code of Virginia of eighteen hundred and sixty,
and of all Jaws now in force and which hereafter may be in
force for the government of towns containing less than five
thousand inhabitants.
2. The officers of said town shall consist of seven trustees,
to wit: Albert Keys, H. C. Brawner, C. W. C. Dunnington,
Wm. Calvert, J. F. Wheat, D. C. Garrison, and Thomas Chap-
man, who shall constitute the mayor and council of said town,
any three of whom shall be a board for the transaction of
business. The mayor and council shall have power to appoint
a sergeant and such other officers as may be necessary, to-
gether with a police force for the preservation of order, who
shall remain in office till their successors shall be elected or
appointed and qualified according to law.
3. This act shall be in force from its passage.
