Chap. 232.—An ACT to Amend and Re-enact Sections 1, 4 and 5 of an
Act to Incorporate the Abingdon and Denton’s Valley Turnpike Com-
pany, passed February 16, 1867.
Approved March 19, 1872.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
sections one, four and five of “an act to incorporate the Abing-
don and Denton’s Valley Turnpike Company, in the county of
Washington,” passed February sixteenth, eighteen hundred
and sixty-seven, be amended and re-enacted so as to read as
follows:
§ 1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That for the
purpose of constructing a turnpike road from Abingdon, in the
county of Washington, to a point on the Denton’s Valley road,
in said county, to be selected by the company hereinafter in-
corporated, it shall be lawful to open books to receive subscrip-
tions to the amount of three thousand dollars capital stock,
divided into shares of twenty dollars each. The said books
shall be opened under the superintendence of Thomas G. Mc-
Connell, Charles S. Bekem, James C. Greenway, Moses Rh.
LIathim, John White, William M. Gray, and David Denton, or
any three of them, in the town of Abingdon, at the house of
John White, jr., and at such other place or places, and under
the direction of such other commissioners as a majority of the
above named commissioners may appoint; and it shall be law-
fal for the said commissioners to receive subscriptions payable
in labor, to be done on said road, or in any article of trade,
merchandise, or other property saleable in the county, and at
such price and payable at such times as may be agreed upon at
the time the subscription is made between the commissioners
and subscribers.
§ 4. The said company shall appoint a surveyor or engineer
to survey and locate the said road, the grade not to exceed
four degrees, and the width not to be less than sixteen feet,
except on hill sides, where digging is required, the width may
be fifteen feet.
§ 5. The said company shall commence the construction of
said work within one year from the first day of April, eighteen
hundred and seventy-two, and complete the same within two
years thereafter.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
