Chap. 228.—An ACT to Incorporate the Staunton, Stribling Springs and
West Virginia Turnpike Company.
Approved March 18, 1872.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That it shall be
lawful to open books at Staunton, under the direction of Dr.
Wm. S. McChesney, John M. Kinney, EK. M. Cushing, N. K.
Trout, and H. M. Bell; at Parnassus, under the direction of
James A. Hamrick, Martin S. Whitmore, Wm. B. Cochran,
Wiliam McFall, John Hogshead, H. H. Douglass, and John
Snider; at Stribling Springs, under the direction of Francis
Gilkerson, George B. Dunlop, Samuel Fauber, Thomas S.
Hogshead, Abraham Huffman, Chesley Kinney, J. C. Horn, H.
Brenaman, A. S. Horn, Michael O'Connell, Wm. D. Hogshead,
David C. Hogshead, and Wm. M. Hogshead, and such other
person or peis )ns as any three of the above named persons
may appoint, in their respective localities, and at such time
and place or places as they may select, for the purpose of re-
ceiving subscriptions to a joint capital stock, not exceeding in
the whole twenty thousand dollars, to be divided into shares
of one hundred dollars each, for the purpose of constructing
a turnpike road from Staunton, by way of Stribling Springs,
near White Oak Lick, to the top of Shenandoah mountain,
near the junction of the lines of Highland county, in this
state, and Pendleton county, in West Virginia.
2. Be it further enacted, That when the amount sufficient to-
construct said road, by estimate of the engineer, is subscribed,
the subscribers, their heirs, executors or assigns, shall be and
are hereby incorporated into a company, by the name and
style of “The Staunton, Stribling Springs and West Virginia
Turnpike Company,” subject to the general laws of the state
appucable to such corporations, except so far as modified by
is act. ,
3. Be it further enacted, That the said road from Staunton
to Stribling Springs shall not exceed four degrees in grade,
and may be McAdamized—of a width not less than fourteen
feet, with an additional good side road, not graveled, with all
necessary culverts. The section from Stribling Springs to top
of Shenandoah mountain not to exceed five degrees; and the
said company shall have a right to occupy and use so much of
the bed of the present county roads between the terminal
points named in this act, by and with the consent of the county
court, as may be necessary for the location and construction of
said turnpike.
4. This act shall be in force from its passage.
