Duty on Sumac.
Agreed to March 2, 1872.
Whereas, many of the people of the state of Virginia hav
turned their attention to gathering and curing sumac, and i
has become an important branch of industry, as the sales fo:
1871 of this article alone in Virginia amounted to over $300,000
and whereas, this industry can only be protected by requiring a1
import duty on sumac brought from foreign markets: be it
1. Resolved (the house of delegates concurring), that thi
congress of the United States be and it is hereby respectfull:
solicited by the general assembly of Virginia to refuse t
reduce the present rate of import duty on sumac or exempt i
from duty.
2. Resolved, That the governor be requested to transmit
copy of these resolutions to the president of the senate anc
speaker of the house of representatives of the United States
and also to our senators and representatives in congress.
