Chap. 184.—-An ACT to Incorporate the Stafford Free Bridge or Ferry
Company.
Approved March 14, 1872.
Whereas, a large number of the citizens of Stafford county
have, by petition, memorialized the general assembly for an act
to incorporate a joint stock company for the purpose of con-
structing a free bridge or ferry from some point in said county
to the town of Fredericksburg: therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That it shall be
lawful to open books for subscription, in money, land or other
property, to an amount not exceeding twenty-five thousand
dollars, in shares of twenty-five dollars each, to constitute a
joint capital stock for constructing a bridge, free for the pas-
sage of persons or property, without toll or imposition except
as hereinafter provided, across the Rappahannock river, from
some point in the county of Stafford to a point to be selected
by the commissioners, hereinafter named, opposite any street
in the town of Fredericksburg, not now occupied by any bridge
or ferry.
2. The said books shall be opened at any place of voting in
each township in the county of Stafford, under the supervision
of Wm. Irvin, James Briggs, Gustavus B. Wallace, James S.
Green, A. R. Packard, Thomas G. Moncure, Ludwell Herndon,
Lyman Kellog, Wm. Ashby, Albert Clift, Powhatan Moncure
and N. W. Ford, or any four of them, who are hereby autho-
rized to appoint other commissioners to act at either of the
paces aforesaid, or at such other place or places as they may
rect.
3. When five thousand dollars of the capital stock shall have
been subscribed, the subscribers, their executors and assigns,
shall be and are hereby incorporated into a company, by the
name and style of the Stafford Free Bridge Company, subject
to the provisions of chapter sixty-four of the Code of eighteen
hundred and sixty.
4, If a sufficient amount to erect said bridge shall not have
been subscribed at the time of opening said books as aforesaid,
then it shall be lawful for said company to establish a ferry
from the point selected for said bridge, and in that case the
name of the company shall be changed to the Stafford Ferry
Company; and the said company shall be subject to all the
provisions of the said chapter of the Code not inconsistent with
the privileges hereby granted. |
5. All persons residing in the county of Stafford, or city of
Fredericksburg, shall, during such residence, be exempt from
toll on their persons; and all vehicles, animals and articles,
owned or kept in said county or city, by persons residing
therein, shall be subject to like exemption; and all persons not
residing in the said county of Stafford or city of Fredericks-
burg shall be subject to, and pay the following rates of toll, to
wit: for each person, two cents, and for each wheel two cents ;
for each horse, mule or ox, two cents; and for sheep, cattle and
hogs, one cent per head.
6. The said bridge or ferry shall not be within one hundred
yards of either of the present bridges.
7. This act shall be in force from its passage.
