Chap. 139.—An ACT to Provide for a Re-division of the County of Rock-
ingham into ‘Townships.
Approved March 2, 1872.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
it shall be the duty of the governor of this commonwealth, as
soon after the passage of this act as may be, to appoint in the
county of Rockingham three discreet men, citizens of said
county, to re-divide said county into not more than five town-
ships, and he shall inforin said comimissivners forthwith of
their appointment.
2. The said commissioners shall proceed without delay to
the discharge of the dutics imposed upon them by this act,
conforming in all respects in their action to the provisions of
an act approved April second, eighteen hundred and seventy,
entitled “an act to provide for dividing the several counties
of this state into townships.”
3. The re-division of said county into townships under this
act shall take effect on the first day of July, eighteen hundred
and seventy-two, and the election of township officers for said
townships shall be held on the fourth Thursday in May, eigh-
teen hundred and seventy-two, in accordance with the provis-
ions of existing laws: provided, that at that election there shall
be elected in each township three justices of the peace, and
three constables, whose terms shall be one, two and three years
respectively.
4. This act shall be in force from its passage.
