Chap. 131.—An ACT to Incorporate the West Point Ferry Company.
In force March 4, 1872.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
James F’. New, Reuben A. Hillyard, Dr. Tomlin Braxton, Tho-
mas J. Christian, Leiper N. Robinson, William D. Pollard,
John Haldeman, and James N. Stubbs, be and they are hereby
created a body corporate and politic, by the name and style of
the West Point Ferry Company.
2. The said company are hereby authorized and empowered
to establish, and they and their successors to perpetually keep,
a public ferry across the Mattaponi river from any point or
points within the present limite of the town of West Point,
and to run and land their boat or boats at any point or points
on the shores of King and Queen county, from Shepherd's
warehouse down to the lower line of Thomas J. Christian's
land where it strikes the river; and also to run their boat or
boats across the Pamunkey river from any point or points
within the limits of said town to any point or points on the
land of Benjamin N. Robinson, known as Brickhouse, in the
county of New Kent, and also to run their boats from one
river into the other, across the channel of the York river.
3. That said company may use, in the operation of their
ferry or ferries, boats propelled by oars, sail, or steam.
4. That said company may acquire, by purchase or other-
wise, and hold lands in the said town of West Point, King and
Queen, and New Kent counties, for the purpose of erecting
wharves, operating, landing, aud repairing their ferry boats.
5. That said company shall have perpetual succession, may
sue and be sued by their corporate name, and shall be vested
with all the rights and privilezes, and subject to all the limita-
tions and restrictions applicable to corporations of this character.
6. That the rates of transportation across either of said
rivers, at the ferries hereby authorized, shall not be more than
fifteen cents for every person, horse, mule, jack, ox, and cow,
twelve cents for every head of neat cattle, eight cents for every
sheep, hog, goat, or lamb, fifteen cents for every riding car-
riage, wagon, and cart, per wheel, and for all animals travel-
ing with a menagerie such rates as may be agreed on between
the company and the proprietor of such menagerie.
7. This act shall be in force from its passage.
