Chap. 116.—An ACT Incorporating the Petcrsburg Law Association.
In force February 26, 1872.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
John J. Cocke, Samuel D. Davies, Joseph S. Budd, Junius BE.
Leigh, W. W. Adams, Richard B. Davis, J. Wesley Friend,
David A. Lyon, George S. Bernard, W. L. Watkins, Edwin M.
Mann, Ro. H. Jones, Jr., F. H. Archer, R. G. Pegram, John
Lyon, Drury A. Hinton, Robert H. Mann, Alexander Donnan,
W. F. C. Gregory, S. S. Weisiger, E. M. Cox, Isaac S. Keeler,
James Boisseau and their associates and successors, or & ma-
jority of them, are hereby created and constituted a body
politic and corporate under the name and style of the “Peters-
burg Law Association,” and by that name and style shall have
perpetual succession, may contract and be contracted with, sue
and be sued, have a common seal, and all the rights and privi-
leges of a corporation, and shall be subject to all the rules,
regulations and restrictions imposed by existing laws so far as
they are applicable and not inconsistent with the provisions of
this act.
2. The objects of said association are to establish a law
library in the city of Petersburg and to encourage and facili-
tate the study of the law.
3. The capital stock of said association shall be divided into
shares, the number to be determined by the by-laws, but it
shall not exceed twenty thousand dollars.
4. Each stockholder present at any meeting either in person
or by proxy, shall be entitled to one vote on each share of the
stock held by him.
5. The said association may, by its by-laws, determine the
number of its directors and other officers and prescribe the
mode of their election and their duties.
6. The said association may elect a hbrarian who shall have
custody of the library and manage the same according to such
rules and regulations as the said association may prescribe.
7. It shall be lawful for said association to have and hold by
purchase or otherwise, real estate sufficient for the transaction
of its business, and to sell and assign the same.
8. This act shall be in force from its passage.
