Chap. 30.—An ACT to Establish the Port Warden’s Line for that part of
the City of Portsmouth fronting on Elizabeth river on the North.
Approved January 14, 1671.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the port warden’s line on the Elizabeth river, at the north end
of the city of Portsmouth, shall be a line, running east and
west, parallel to North street in said city, and six hundred and
ten feet north of the north side of said street, to which said
line the owners of lots of land situated on the river, at the
north end of the city of Portsmouth, shall have the right to
fill up their lots, and construct wharves, docks, and other im-
provements thereon.
2. And be it further enacted, That the council of the city of
Portsmouth be and they are hereby authorized to make such
further extension of said port warden’s line, north of the line
hereby established, not conflicting with private right, public
convenience, or the navigation of the river, as may hereafter
appear beneficial to the interests of the owners of the lots of
land situated on the river at the north end of the city, the
city, and the public; and the owners of said lots of land shall
have the right to fill up and improve their lota to such ex-
tended port warden’s line, whenever established.
3. This act shall be in force from its passage.
